Why I Serve: Lessons from the Littlest Disciples

Opinion and Commentary • Feb . 02 . 2026

WRITTEN BY Sam Alvarez

Being part of the Kids Ministry at The Well has been such a blessing. Getting to pour into our church with the gifts God has given me has brought so much joy. The opportunity we have as volunteers to plant gospel seeds, as well as foster meaningful relationships with these kiddos, is such a beautiful thing to take part in. Some of my favorite moments while serving are the ones that, on the surface, might seem mundane or even challenging, but end up being unexpectedly sweet and pure.

Just last week, I was struggling to get one boy to listen and come inside after playing outdoors. He wasn’t receiving anything I was saying—nothing was getting through. It was a little frustrating in the moment, but it was also a chance for me to practice patience and love this kiddo the way Jesus loves me: consistently, gently, and without condition. Eventually, his dad stepped in and helped guide him through the situation.

Moments like this remind me why I serve—even the smallest interactions can reflect the heart of Jesus.

Moments like this remind me why I serve—even the smallest interactions can reflect the heart of Jesus. Through Kids Ministry, I’m constantly reminded that discipleship often happens in those small, everyday moments rather than the big, dramatic ones. A quiet apology, a question about God during craft time, a child praying out loud for the first time—these are glimpses of God’s kingdom breaking into their hearts. And it’s humbling to think that God lets us play even a small part in that story.

I love being a part of the Kids Ministry, and I’m so grateful for all the work that The Well has done to make this ministry what it is today. Week after week, I see how God is shaping these kids and shaping me, too. I look forward to continuing to love and serve these kiddos with a heart like Christ’s, trusting that He will take the seeds we plant and grow them into something far more beautiful than we could ever imagine.
