Discipleship/Generosity and Stewardship • Dec . 02 . 2024

WRITTEN BY Zakarias Triunfo

Serving isn’t just a blessing for those who receive; it’s a blessing for those who give.

At The Well, we believe that the church is not built on the talents of a few, but on the sacrifices of many. Every person has gifts and talents that, if used to serve the church, will make an eternal difference. Because of this reality, we don’t just “do” church but give our lives to God’s plan, believing that generosity is worship. We seek to be generous with our time, talents, and treasures so that the Kingdom of God may be expanded in and through us.

We asked several covenant members to share their thoughts about this, one of whom is Isaac Breedlove, a member of the Mueller CG who has been serving on the elementary-grade part of The Well Kids team since September 2023.

“My favorite part about serving in kids' ministry is seeing the love, joy, and childlike faith that the kids bring every Sunday. It's so refreshing, seeing their knowledge of the Word, the questions that they ask, and how I'm being challenged in a new way every Sunday. I think it's something that I really enjoy because it allows me to grow.”

One of those occasions that challenged Isaac to grow included an Easter egg hunt some time ago, where he witnessed several kids, who were faster and more keen-eyed, gather more eggs. These kids then decided to disperse and share their eggs with those who were struggling to find any. Another was at a Celebration Sunday when he saw an elementary school student he’d taught get baptized and heard her profession of faith.

“It was just super sweet to see the love for the Lord that she has already at such a young age.”

Galatians 5:17 says that the desires of the flesh and the Spirit are opposed to each other and highlights that, as Christians, we experience an internal struggle between our sinful nature and our desire to obey God. Isaac was no stranger to this, saying that he’d been hesitant to serve for a while. When he was a student, he always had an excuse for why he couldn’t be more involved. As an adult, those excuses about studying and school turned into excuses about his family. But this is not unique to him.

We’ve all had thoughts of not being equipped or not knowing where to serve, or we’ve found reasons why we don’t have the time or why someone else is better suited. Even Moses and Gideon in the Old Testament had similar excuses. But none of the cares or everyday stresses of this world should matter when God has called you to something. And He has called each and every one of us to serve.

“I think I've learned a lot from being able to serve and learning how to die to myself, sacrificing my time in ways that aren't always enjoyable; but by the end of it, I feel rejuvenated and so refreshed by it. Kids Ministry is honestly great. My wife and I are busy, but I wanted to serve, and I knew Kids Ministry really needed it.”

Serving isn’t just a blessing for those who receive; it’s a blessing for those who give. Isaac’s experience is a reminder that when we commit to serving others we are also blessed. This is especially evident in the growth of Kids Ministry at The Well. With over 100 children currently involved, and many more expected to join, the ministry is one of the fastest-growing at the church. As covenant members and regular attenders continue to be fruitful and multiply, the need for volunteers and servants is greater than ever.

Isaac is just one of the many people who have made a commitment to serving the church and raising up the next generation. But we are called to live in community, and people like Isaac can’t do it alone. We encourage you to check out one of the many serving opportunities at The Well and ask God where He wants you to use your time, talents, and treasures.

Reflection Questions:
Are you serving in any capacity at your home church? Why or why not?

Ask God to help you submit your desires to him.
