Serving the City: Reaching Austin with Love

Evangelism and Mission/Generosity and Stewardship • Jan . 23 . 2025

WRITTEN BY Zakarias Triunfo

Have you ever felt the tug to serve others but paused, unsure of how to share Christ’s love effectively? Many believers wrestle with this question. At The Well, we offer the Disciple Making Cohort (DMC), a 10 week program designed to equip believers to share the gospel and build intentional relationships with those who need Christ. This initiative has changed lives, including those of Amy and Lola, who shared their experiences with us.

For Amy, the DMC provided the structure and community she needed to step out in faith. Despite growing up familiar with the call to be “fishers of men,” she realized she had never been equipped to live it out fully.

“I participated in an outreach ministry for kids before this, but not really with the purpose to intentionally share God’s word and bring people to faith,” Amy shared. “In a DMC, you are learning how to share the Word of God with people and actually help them come to have a relationship with Christ.” Through the DMC, she discovered the joy and boldness of living out her faith intentionally.

Lola’s initial experience with DMC was marked by challenges. She found the program demanding but ultimately transformative. “I didn’t see that boldness in myself at first,” she explained. “But the teachings I received in DMC really equipped me to go out and share the good news of Christ. If possible, I believe that every believer should take this course—it’s not mandatory, but I think it should be.”

If each of us reached out and changed just one person’s life—imagine the difference that would make.

Amy speaks passionately about the need for empathy and outreach in Austin. Reflecting on her own experiences of poverty and isolation, she emphasized the hidden struggles many face in a city often perceived as privileged.

“Growing up, I came from a very poor background and experienced social isolation,” she said. “Austin is a privileged city, but there are so many kids and people who need us. There’s a lot of depression and anxiety, and many people are isolated, just like I was growing up.”

Amy’s heart is particularly burdened for the Booker T. Washington Terrace community, an area near Eastside High School. She recalled how, as a child, no one came to her neighborhood to share Christ’s love. Today, through the DMC, she’s been able to offer simple acts of kindness, like bringing pizza or organizing sports for kids.

“A lot of kids need us,” Amy emphasized. “So many people in Austin don’t know Christ, and they need to experience His love.”

Similarly, Lola’s experiences growing up in the Terrace community shaped her passion for outreach. She’s seen the neighborhood’s transformation over the years and believes intentional outreach can impact not just the present but generations to come. Reflecting on missed opportunities, Lola shared the weight of losing a colleague without sharing Christ’s love.

“Tomorrow is not promised,” Lola said. “We need to share the good news now, whether people accept it or not. We can’t assume someone is saved, and we can’t wait for the perfect moment. We just need to step out in faith. If each of us reached out and changed just one person’s life—imagine the difference that would make.”

Amy and Lola’s testimonies highlight that serving the city is about more than individual transformation. It has the potential to reshape entire communities for generations. Acts 6 reminds us that this mission requires the whole body of Christ. It’s not just for those in vocational ministry; every believer has a role in God’s Kingdom work. We encourage you to seek God’s guidance and step out in faith.
