1 Thessalonians

ABOUT THE SERIES

1 Thessalonians is a letter that is littered with important themes for any local church; discipleship, suffering well, evangelism, holiness, unity, etc. Paul is writing to a very young (new) church, experiencing the hardships of rejecting the culture around them, and surrendering their lives to Christ. However, they are not folding to the culture; they’re excelling in Christ! They’re working, laboring in the gospel, and it is bearing fruit around them. They still have the typical challenges of life on this earth, but they’re seeing spiritual life being produced through them, and Paul is encouraging them to take heart in this! To continue to grow! To see Christ excel through them for the sake of the gospel.

Applying Christ

In this sermon we begin a series in 1 Thessalonians. In this letter Paul is writing to a young, but flourishing and vibrant church about how to continue to do the things they're doing, but also growing in each of their positive traits to do it all the more. One thing that was true of that church was that they were seeking Jesus. But there is more of Jesus to be had. As a church, we too long to seek the face and the heart of Christ, knowing that we can "add" to our pursuit of Him as well. How do we receive more of Jesus? How can we tell if Jesus is active amongst us?

Steadfastness

In this sermon we talk about Steadfastness. We are continuing our journey through the book of 1 Thessalonians and in this sermon observe how they are a great example of steadfastness under persecution. We will seek to learn from their example on what it takes to be a steadfast people. We'll discuss what produces steadfastness, and how it's strengthened. What we learn will encourage us to remain steadfast individually and corporate as we continue to run as a church.

Community

In this sermon, we focus on the topic of community. Community is necessary for the flourishing of our faith, but how do we build community? There are several ways the Scriptures answer this question, but the ones Paul gives today are rather unique.

Holiness

In this sermon we discuss the topic of holiness. Holiness (sanctification) is something that has been historically misconstrued to be something it Biblically isn't. Because of this, our culture has rejected many forms of healthy striving for holiness, throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Ultimately, holiness is one of the key ways that we receive more of Jesus in our lives to it is important to understand and pursue.

Hope

In this sermon, we focus on HOPE. The Apostle Paul, in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:11, reminds us not to grieve like those without hope, but to believe in the resurrection of Jesus and the hope it brings. Hope in Christ is not mere optimism; it is a firm foundation. Paul urges us to believe, anticipate Christ’s return (parousia), and persevere. We are called to be people of hope, believing in Jesus, pursuing His presence, and persevering through challenges. Let us live in the light of this eternal hope and be ready for His return.

Attitudes of Application

In this sermon, we focus on how we can apply this 1 Thessalonians. Paul gives rapid-fire commands to this thriving church, many of which likely apply directly to us today. How do we take everything that we've learned throughout this book, recognize that following in the commands of Christ produces joy in Christ (and therefore more of Christ), and seek to apply the commands of Christ into our life?
