Rest and Reset in God’s Presence: A Time to Look Back & Look Ahead
Our lives move quickly, but our souls were never meant to live at full speed. Beneath the noise and demands of daily life is a deeper longing for rest—not merely physical rest, but the kind that reaches the heart and renews the mind. Scripture reminds us that this rest is not found in withdrawal from the world, but in returning to the God who made us.
“You have made for us Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”
— Saint Augustine
“Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.”
— Ephesians 4:21–24 (NLT)
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
— Romans 12:2 (NIV)
Getting Started: Preparing Your Heart
1. Minimize Distractions
Find a quiet space where you can be alone with God. Turn off your phone and set aside any distractions. Let your Bible and this guide be your companions.
2. Breathe and Be Still
Take a few deep breaths. As you inhale, ask for more of His presence. As you exhale, recount God’s goodness.
3. Let Go and Rest
Release any expectations. Be open to how God wants to meet you during this time. Allow Him to guide your thoughts and reflections.
4. Set Aside Time
Consider setting aside a couple of hours, in lieu of the Sunday Gathering, to simply be present with the Lord. Be expectant for Christ to speak.
Part 1: Look Back and Remember God’s Faithfulness
Reflect on the Past Year
Spend a few moments asking yourself these questions and meditating on their answers:
-
What were the significant moments, both joyful and challenging, this past year?
-
How did you see God’s hand at work in these times?
-
How did God minister to you during these times?
(Things He said through the Scriptures, prayer, visions and dreams, and/or your community) -
What answered prayers or blessings can you praise Him for?
Scripture Reflection
“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.”
Psalm 23:1
How has God shepherded you this year? Take time to thank Him for His provision, guidance, and care.
Prayer Prompt
Thank God for His faithfulness. Express gratitude for the ways He has provided, protected, and walked with you.
Final Reflection Questions
-
What did God reveal to you today?
-
Is there a specific word or promise you sense God speaking over your life?
-
How can you carry this time of reflection into your daily walk with Him?
